The short version: pick the drive type by what’s next to your garage, the horsepower by what your door weighs, and the features by how you live. Everything else is packaging.
1. Drive type: the noise question
Chain drives are the proven standard. They’re strong, reliable, and cost less. Their one drawback is noise, which doesn’t matter in a detached garage but matters a lot under a bedroom.
Belt drives do the same job with a reinforced rubber belt instead of a chain. They run dramatically quieter. If your garage shares a wall or ceiling with living space, the belt drive is worth every penny.
2. Power: match the motor to the door
A 1/2 HP motor handles most standard steel and aluminum doors all day long. Heavy wood doors, oversized double doors, and reinforced doors in high-wind areas want the 3/4 HP motor with an I-beam rail, like the LiftMaster 8587W. An underpowered opener works harder than it should and dies young.
3. AC or DC motor
DC motors start and stop smoothly, run quieter, and allow battery backup. AC motors are simple and proven. If quiet and soft operation matter, or you want battery backup at all, you’re shopping DC.
4. Battery backup: the power-outage test
When a summer storm knocks out power in Pueblo, a battery backup opener keeps working, so you’re not fighting the emergency release with a car trapped inside. If your garage is your main way in and out of the house, get it. The 8550WLB is the one we install most for exactly this reason.
5. Smart features: myQ is genuinely useful

6. Safety: non-negotiable
Any opener we install includes photoelectric sensors that stop and reverse the door if anything crosses its path, and rolling-code remotes that can’t be copied. If an opener is old enough to predate those sensors, replace it. That one isn’t a judgment call.
